NSERC provides funding to photonics research network

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) has announced funding for a new broadband research network. NSERC will provide $7 million over five years to the Agile All-Photonics Research Network (AAPN), that permits the capacity of entire national networks to be transmitted over a single fibre. Nearly $1 million and in-kind support was provided by a host of private and public sector partners. AAPN links five universities for developing highly flexible, intelligent networks offering high bandwidth on demand. Dr David Plant, professor of electrical and computer engineering at McGill Univ, is the grant's principal investigator and AAPN scientific director. Other participating universities are Queen's Univ, McMaster Univ, the Univ of Ottawa and the Univ of Toronto.
