The International Minerals Innovation Institute (IMII) is investing $325,000 in the Univ of Saskatchewan to launch a project examining deep groundwater systems (aquifers) to achieve sustainable resource development in the mining and other extraction sectors. The project has submitted an application to the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council to secure matching funds. To be led by Dr Grant Ferguson, as associate professor with the US Department of Civil and Geological Engineering, the two-year project will conduct a mix of basic and applied research into the use of aquifers, such as those used in the potash industry that lie more than 1km underground. The five-year-old IMII has supported several research projects at U of S in the past, including one for safety-related research. It is supported by industry and the provincial government and aims to leverage funding
