GHRI links Canadian and foreign researchers

The Global Health Research Initiative (GHRI) is providing $20 million for 13 teams comprised of Canadian and foreign researchers to examine issues related to pressing health problems in the developing world. Each team will receive $1.6 million over four years. The awards were made through the Teasdale-Corti Team Grants program and were chosen through peer review from a roster of more than 250 applications. The projects link Canadian researchers with their counterparts from countries including Mexico, El Salvador, Cambodia, China, Burkina Faso, Nepal and many others. The awards are named in honour of Drs Lucille Teasdale and Piero Corti, a husband and wife team who worked to build the capabilities of African health care practitioners. Teasdale was a surgeon who died of AIDS in 1996 after operating on patients in Uganda.
