Garth Gibson

Dr Garth Gibson has been appointed president and CEO of the Vector Institute, effective January 2/18. The Canadian born Gibson is moving to Toronto to head up the recently created artificial intelligence (AI) non-profit organization after a 26-year career in the US as a professor and associate dean of computer science at Carnegie Mellon Univ (CMU) in Pittsburgh. In addition to teaching and research, he founded CMU’s Parallel Data Lab and Petascale Data Storage Institute. He was also co-founder, chief technology officer and chief scientist at Panasas, a privately held, Sunnyvale, CA-headquartered data storage firm specializing in high-performance network-attached storage for technical computing environments. Gibson holds a BSc in computer science and applied mathematics from the Univ of Waterloo and an MSc and PhD from Univ of California Berkeley. The Vector Institute is one of Canada’s largest AI organizations having attracted $100 million in public funding and over $90 million from private investors since its launch in March. It is also the expected recipient of at least $40 million from the $125 million announced in the latest federal Budget as part of the government’s pan-Canadian AI strategy.
