The federal party platforms have now been released and the S&T community can be forgiven for expressing disappointment that science, technology and innovation (STI) are being afforded little prominence in the most important election in a generation. That in itself is not surprising. STI rarely receives widespread attention during Canadian election campaigns.

Policy and funding issues may bubble up from time to time (science muzzling and advocacy for a chief science officer have been mentioned). But parties tend to focus on so-called mainstreet ("the middle class") or wedge (niqab) topics rather than the underpinnings of the knowledge economy.

There's no doubt Canada could use a major STI boost. After years of stagnant funding and an over-reliance of natural resources, many previously promising tech sectors have withered. What's encouraging, however, is the vibrancy of the STI community and its efforts to make do with limited resources.

As this issue of R$ highlights, Canadians are networking, collaborating and innovating as never before. They are addressing global competition and the superior support STI receives in other nations by marshalling national expertise with a firm grasp on industry needs.

Whether it's innovative funding solutions for cash-strapped tech firms or the networking of diverse STI assets for greater impact, Canadians are demonstrating excellence and creativity. Now it's time for the next federal government to step up and give Canadians the policies, programs and funding they require to capitalize on homegrown expertise.
