Aerospace is one tech-based sector where the federal government is doing a capable job of tracking, analyzing and promoting the industry in all its component parts. With the release of a joint Industry Canada-industry report on the composition, performance and future opportunities for space and aerospace, all players have a strong statistical basis for moving ahead on the R&D, production and sales fronts (see page 4).

Starting with the Emerson review of 2012, industry and government have worked closely to support the more than 700 companies that make up the sector. Recommendations stemming from the review are being implemented, and while more could be done to help de-risk promising technologies, encourage even greater industry-academic partnerships and forecast future trends and technology needs, the essential ground work is in place.

On the health front, the creation of a panel to examine how innovation can improve the faltering healthcare system is also cause for optimism (see page 4).

There are other equally critical tech-based sectors that could use similar attention. Micro and nanoelectronics, telecommunications and advanced manufacturing — to name a few — hold considerable promise for future growth. Sector-based roadmaps that helped to delineate existing capacity and future requirements are no longer produced and research funding is stagnating or in decline.

Canada sorely needs a balanced approach to stimulating traditional and tech-based sectors. Hopefully the forthcoming S&T Strategy recognizes this and provides the appropriate guidance.
