Canada, Germany to expand cooperation in more research areas

The National Research Council (NRC) has forged an agreement with German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt or DLR) to further collaboration on aeronautics research and other research interests in the future. Rolf Henke, DLR executive board member responsible for aeronautics research, and Iain Stewart, NRC president, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on January 28 during a German-Canadian conference in Munich, Germany. The two government agencies said they will complement and support each other’s R&D, something that they have been working on for several years. One area of cooperation recently identified is a joint airborne measuring project to develop L-band radar technology to be conducted in Canada. Other future research areas for cooperation include space, advanced manufacturing technology, digital technology, energy and the environment. The agreement also covers cooperation in strategic planning and innovation management. In this area, one possible area of cooperation is for the DLR project management agency to work with NRC to promote R&D and innovation in Germany. In 2015, the two agencies also agreed to collaborate on research on alternative aircraft fuels, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) and aircraft cabin research, to name a few.
